Graduate Studies - Computer Science

Masters in Computer Science

Computer science combines the intellectual challenge of a young discipline with the excitement of an innovative and rapidly expanding technology. It has been an active area at Lakehead for over 25 years. The department resides in LU’s Advanced Technology and Academic Centre (ATAC), a striking building housing many of the University’s computing activities. Faculty, staff and students are provided state-of-the-art computing facilities including smart lecture rooms, labs and variety of computing technologies (e.g. Virtual Reality, Parallel Computing). The Master's program in computer science provides an opportunity to explore the breadth and depth of advanced knowledge in computer science. Our program includes both a selection of advanced courses and individual student research. The balance between courses and research can follow one of two options: Master's by Thesis, which requires fewer courses and has a more substantial research project, and Master's by Course, which includes more courses balanced with a limited research component. Moreover, our program has a Co-op placement opportunity for more industrial experience.

The Thesis Option

A candidate admitted to the MSc Thesis option will normally be expected to complete six half courses and a thesis (CS5901 which is weighted as two FCEs) for a total of five FCEs.  The half-courses consist of: CS 5111, a half-course designated by the Department, two half-courses in Computer Science at the graduate level and two other half-courses at the graduate or fourth-year level, at least one of which must be from the Department of Computer Science.

The Course Option

The program consists of five FCEs: CS 5800 (Research Directed Project which is weighted one FCE) and eight half courses which include CS5111, a half-course designated by the Department, four half-courses in Computer Science at the graduate level and two other half-courses at the graduate or fourth-year level, at least one of which must be from the Department of Computer Science.

The Co-operative Option

This is an employment option where a graduate student normally will be admitted after completion of three full graduate courses for a starting date in May. Co-op employment is for a minimum of 8 months (two terms) and maximum of 16 months (four terms).
